How do I know if a tree needs to be removed?

There are many signs which include:

  • The tree is dead or visibly dying
  • The tree is unhealthy (tree branches are dying, or the trunk shows signs of decay)
  • The tree is damaged beyond repair (damage from a storm)
  • The tree is growing too close to your house, utility lines or other structures.
  • The tree is leaning in a dangerous direction (towards your house or driveway)
  • The tree drops troublesome leaves or needles, sap, seeds, cotton, and/or branches

What is the best time of year to have my trees trimmed?

It’s best to trim or prune a tree or shrub during its dormant season. Trimming while dormant allows the tree time to heal before the warmer weather brings back insects and pathogens. Without leaves, there is less in the way when it comes to trimming. This makes it easier to visualize a tree’s branch structure.

What is the difference between trimming and pruning?

Pruning is generally associated with trees and shrubs. Pruning involves cutting away infected, dead, and broken branches to improve their health and growth capabilities. Proper pruning removes potential safety hazards due to falling branches and adds to your yard’s aesthetic.

Trimming is generally associated with shrubs and hedges for design purposes. Besides promoting a clean look, trimming alleviates excessively dense bushes which block essential sunlight and moisture from reaching your landscape.

Why should I have my stumps ground?

Although tree stumps may look harmless at first glance, it is important to have them removed for several reasons ranging from aesthetics to safety.

Shortly after they are separated from the tree, stumps begin a very slow decaying process Over time, that decaying, rotting stump becomes a hub for home damaging pests like termites or carpenter ants. Old stumps can get in the way of mowing your lawn or be a hazard for you and your family when in the yard.
